The University of Missouri at Kansas City retained Candace White as their basketball coach after she finished last season as an interim. WNBA threads tied to Candace White: White played at Texas Tech, where she was a teammate of Plenette Pierson, who plays for the Shock. She replaced Bo Overton at UMKC, who was dumb enough to take the coaching gig for the Chicago Sky. White also played at Seward Community College in Wichita, Kan., preceding Jerise Freeman and Wyvonne Jones, who just left the University of the Pacific. | | 4:33p |
The ever-readable Melody Gutierrez, who covers the Monarchs beat for the Sacramento Bee, wrote that 80 to 90 percent of WNBA players spend the offseason overseas, which can pose problems for their WNBA teams. News from the defending champion Detroit Shock camp is that three of their four power players -- Cheryl Ford, Kara Braxton, and Plenette Pierson -- plus finals MVP Deanna Nolan are still playing abroad. Since the Shock is cap-locked from bringing in training camp players, they are limited to 11 bodies -- 6-8 Katie Feenstra is the only power position player in camp, followed by small forwards Swin Cash and Jacqueline Batteast at 6-1, and shooter Katie Smith at 5-11. The fifth-tallest player at Shock camp is 5-8 guard Elaine Powell, a matter of fact which is supposed to be funny, but Powell would surely kick Feenstra's ass up and down the Palace floor if she wanted to. | | 5:13p |
Brandy Reed didn't survive the Sparks' first cut, which Scribbler might suggest is the sanest move they could've made. The Silver Stars, maybe the most improved team on paper, waived Shyra Ely. I'd guess the Stars will eventually go with: Riley Diawara Young Buescher Irvin V. Johnson Wecker Little Hammon Ferdinand Darling I like that group so much, I am trying to find a way to follow the Monarchs on their August road trip to Indiana, Connecticut, and Texas. The Storm waived Shaun Gortman and Debbie Merrill, reducing their camp roster size to 23. Kerri Gardin survived the first cut, which is remarkable, considering she's 107 years old, according to wnba.com. | | 11:54p |
The Lynx gave Brooke Smith #22. One would have to be an unfathomably geeky fanboy to have two Lynx jerseys that say "Smith" (they're probably retiring Katie's #30, do you think). It's very good to see Brooke Smith smiling again in this Lynx media day photo -- last we saw, Florida State was ending her run at Stanford in the second round of the NCAA regionals, and Smith was her usual demonstrably emotional self. There won't be two players I'm rooting harder for than Brooke Smith and Brittany Wilkins during this preseason. |
