Lynx, if you let Brooke Smith wear her Stanford number in Minnesota, Stanford fans who own an antique Katie Smith jersey -- um, there might be one -- won't have to buy a new one.

It seems the plan is to move all the NWBL Colorado Chill players to San Antonio, and then drive them back to Colorado. So what's my excuse now for not becoming a Silver Stars fan? They have two of the best Chill, a favorite ex-Monarch, and a Kansas State shooter with a catch-and-shoot time of boom-that-went-down-before-you-can-type-it.

With the 36th pick, Sacramento took West Virginia's Meg Bulger, whose sister Kate was a Lynx draftee and a San Jose Spiders roleplayer. (C'mon, Whiz, at #21 what's the difference between South Florida forward Jessica Dickson and Stanford forward Brooke Smith [who went #23 to Minnesota]? The difference is that everyone at Arco knows, and perhaps loves, Brooke Smith.)

I think Phoenix's Harding-for-Smith move was their Plan B or Plan Q.

In my mock of round one, I dropped Brooke Smith to one of the Connecticut's firsts, and put Katie Gearlds in Detroit's spot. (Originally, you see, my plan was to joke about who was going to be the poutier one on the Shock bench, Bill or Brooke.) I don't think much of Gearlds -- I think she benefits unduly from being named Katie while wearing a Purdue jersey -- but she can shoot, and I figured some GM was going to buy into her hype in the first round. I didn't think it would be as soon as Seattle at #6.

The Associated Press reporter covering the Shock has to talk to Ivory Latta and Elaine Powell regularly.

Shay Doron to New York has got to make some of my friends happy.

You know Indiana was thrilled to get Alison Bales at #9. Their weakness was at center, which they patched with Tammy Sutton-Brown and the best center in the college draft. In the second round, the Fever got Brittany Wilkins' college teammate Lyndsey Medders. Hey, maybe the Indiana-Phoenix league championship I always wanted will finally happen (yeah, OK, different league).

Sidney Spencer, your mouthguard won't pass muster in Hollywood, dear.

OK, Comets fans, when Kristen blocks a shot, or hits a clutch basket, you yell NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLIN! Louder!

Chrissy Givens dropped to #31?! What the hell.

Mike Thibault managed to grab Kiera Hardy two rounds later than I thought.

Washington's Cameo Hicks, and Gonzaga's Stephanie Hawk were not drafted. Perhaps they'll be invited to Seattle's camp.

This far, I like Detroit and Indiana, Phoenix and San Antonio.

I'd be happier if Shay were in CT. :\

Marist's upsets killed Chrissy Givens. If MTSU had gone as far as Marist did, Givens would've been Armintie Price.

Meg Bulger is really cute.

I was surprised at Phoenix--IMO, Harding is worth way more than just Tangie Smith.

I think Spencer's mouthguard has character. :\

Actually I'm pretty sure it was for Smith AND the Lynx's first round draft pick next year, which is a pretty big difference. I mean, hopefully they won't be nearly dead last this time, but I'm sure the Mercury will be glad to get two first round picks out of next year's draft.

Are you sure? Nothing I've read about the trade mentions next year's draft pick being part of that trade....

I honestly hadn't been listening closely enough during the announcement, but the first several articles up on the Lynx site had said as much. Now those articles aren't there anymore, so it may have been a mistake. I'm pretty sure SOMEONE traded with draft picks for next year already, but dunno who for sure.

Maybe they got confused with the San Antonio/New York swap. I know draft picks got exchanged there....

Kate Bulger is really cute. I heard that Marc Bulger is really cute. I just wanna know if Meg will be a Monarch longer than a couple of days.

I didn't say Spencer's mouthguard lacked character; I implied Los Angelenos lack, um, well, lots of things.

Marc Bulger isn't bad. ;) Hopefully! She might go this year on IR, what with the torn ACL and all. So...technically longer than a few days?

Hah! Too true!

Griffith has brass ones, but I don't think he'd give away #30. He might, though. They are pretty brassy.

Maybe San Antonio is planning to hold Becky and Riley hostage for all of Colorado's draft picks into the foreseeable future.

Kate Bulger was Miss Irrelevent 2004, but she didn't get a sash. Meg may go back to school, though, since she has a year of eligibility, unless she gave it up willingly. Did she actually declare?

Dickson is a scoring small forward/guard who brings scoring punch off the bench. Smith... well, all I've heard about her is that she has a hook shot and falls over a lot

Phoenix scares me.

I don't envy Dave his job, but I'm betting on Latta either running like hell, turning into a monster, or washing up on the shore of whichever Great Lake that is, with the weapon being a dental drill.

I'm happy with Doron, and to be rid of Becky. I'd also like to hear some of the theological discussions between Shay and Erin Thorn.

Indiana drafted fucking brilliantly. Bales was a steal, Medders was a steal, and Key in the third round was a steal.

That mouthguard is evil.

I have no idea why Givens dropped, or how Hicks dropped out of the draft.

I don't know if Bulger actually declared, and--haha--her name isn't linked on the draft thingy, so I'm guessing Sacto drafted her on the off-chance she comes out. She IS coming off two ACL tears....:\

Aw, Shay and Erin. :) Shay's probably got some good insight into Christianity--she DID attend CTK, after all. ;)

I can see them both approaching it as outsiders- Shay because of the Jewish thing (and the Israeli thing- yeah, I know, connected, but there's something different about being Jewish and from Israel) and Erin both because she's so out of place here and because of her Mormon background (even though she is so not observant, what with the playing on Sundays and the lack of missionarying and the K.B. thing but we will not go there in Frisco's journal).

Hm. Yeah, it depends. I could see them debating it once or twice and then just being like eh, whatevs. As much as Shay is Israeli pride, she's never struck me as being JEWISH pride, if that makes sense. Like, she's Jewish, of course, but she's pretty reserved/personal about her faith. Definitely NOT orthodox, either. If anything, she and Thorn might bond over being lapsed. ;)

Whether you are joking or not, I have given a similar idea way too much thought. If I were running a WNBA team, I wondered how much I would give up now in order to stockpile draft picks in 2010. The answer -- I think, sadly -- is almost nothing because as much as I love Jayne Appel (and we'll start finding out what Janelle Bekkering has as a sophomore), who knows if the league will be around then.

all I've heard about her is that she has a hook shot and falls over a lot

I'm tired of *hearing* "Brooke with the hook!", but I'll not tire of watching it. She is an amazing flopper, and she's so emotive that she starts selling it from the first whistle.
