friscodelrosario@sbcglobal.netFrisco Del Rosario writes about basketball and chess. He was named Chess Journalist of the Year by the Chess Journalists of America in July 2005, and he is the only chess teacher ever to be named Teacher of the Week by the San Jose Mercury News (August 2004). His book A First Book of Morphy was a candidate for chess book of the year. He's had a book about Capablanca bubbling in his head for many years.
Frisco travels far in order to write about women's basketball, having visited eight WNBA and NWBL arenas, and making regular 110-mile drives to Sacramento, where he was a Monarchs season ticketholder. During the 2006-07 season, he charted Project Scoresheet (a project first described in basketball statistical analysis guru Dean Oliver's book Basketball on Paper) defensive data in West Coast Conference games. In 2007-08, he attended 75 Division I games, following the University of the Pacific team as far south as San Diego and as far east as Greeley, Col. He has previewed the Big West Conference in the Pacific preseason magazine twice, and covered the Big West postseason tournament three times.
Frisco's goal every year is to visit more basketball arenas but eat less arena food. The 2008-09 basketball season sent him to the Bahamas for his first trip off the contintental landmass, and he plans to attend some California Collegiate Athletic Association, Pacific West Conference, and Coast Conference games this season.
He is a member of U.S. Basketball Writers of America and the Association for Professional Basketball Research, and he completed Sports Management Worldwide's class in basketball management and scouting.
